I'm just trying to make sure I won't set the house and neighborhood ablaze. Although it would be nice to catch-up with the boys at the fire dept.

Yes, a convection oven uses more electricity than a microwave oven. It takes more energy to heat the air to heat the food than it does to nuke the food and jiggle it on the molecular level into getting hot (which is what microwaves do).

But.

The even, smooth heat of a convection oven produces an evenly-cooked product --especially bread and pastry with a nice thin but strong crust. Nothing works for desserts and gourmet items as well as a convection oven, so if you are a great cook, a chef, consider getting one!

The only difference between a convection baking and non convection baking is the use of the fan. Convection baking makes for much better cooking. And yes a full size oven uses more electricity than a microwave.
