Advice: Listen carefully. If you're not 'getting' the vocab or grammar, ask for help right away. Don't be intimidated by the people that seem to catch on right away (there are always false beginners).
Make flash cards for vocab that's hard for you.
Do the hw and ask all the questions you need to, even if they seem like stupid questions. German grammar is different than English, and most English speakers find it confusing to start.
Don't expect another language to be a secret code for English! Accept things like verb endings and strange word order and just learn it.
But mostly listen, try to read as soon as you have even a few words, and have fun.

Actually German is not that hard to learn. The hardest thing in my opinion is getting the word order right. All the sentences are switched as compared to English. Otherwise, just get the vocabulary down and it's pretty much like English.

It's not too hard...I'm (somewhat) self taught. The hardest part for me was trying to get the "feminine", "masculine", neuter", part down pat. No rhyme or reason to that as far as I can tell, but a good teacher and practice will help you a lot.
Good Luck!
