You have a point there. I guess if you go to heaven, you're resting in peace, and if you go to hell, I guess the peace isn't so good. I don't believe in either, so for me, I'll just be resting. Good question ~

the reason why people say rest in peace is because they hope that the dead person will be left alone even after they have been gone for along time. some people just don't know how to leave the past in the past and they keep bringing up a persons name for whom they didn't like.

I think that people used to actually believe that your soul would be tormented if you were a bad person, or even if you were a good person and were tormented all your life, or even if you had mental problems,...it was a kind thing to say to someone, may your soul rest in peace...yes, I can imagine you could rest in a restless nightmare, if you think about it, and someone might even will that on a person who had been pretty bad all their life..

If you were a bad person it is said that your soul wont have rest and it will wonder around. So when someone dies people say "Rest in peace" hoping your soul wont wonder around feeling guilty of all the bad things they've done.

If I´m not wrong, that comes from the latin word: "requiem in pacem", which is abreviated as RIP. ¿Why peace? Well, I guess it is because human has always feared death, then, it is seen as something "bad" and that´s why peace must be -hippothetically-"agregated"; to make things "less" bad. The christian tradition at latin culture might be responsible of all this world vision in part. That´s my opinion.

I'm only guessing on this one, but priests probably spoke those words over the dead as a sort of admonition not to return as a spirit. Most likely this came out of the middle ages when myths of "restless dead" were fairly common.

How is it that all of these jokers missed your question? Someone actually said “rest in torment”, which, personally, I find difficult. Maybe these people need to be “smarter with their stupidity”!

Consiousness and nature.
Peace is defined by consious being as a opposite of anxiety,i.e., all troubles concious beings feel for being consciousand separate from nature.
Do not belive in terms defined by conscious being. Since whatsoever conscious being define, it can not change the nature, So enjoy as long as your consciousness exist.
