Yup! Yup! I've been vacationing there every year since 2000 and I just LOVE IT! The atmosphere, the people, the food and ahhhh the lush tropical sceneries! Yep, I have traveled to Portland, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Negril along the North Coast & South Coast (pretty much circled the island).
Jamaica is a really beautiful island paradise. Yes, there are some poor areas like any other country in the world...but the people in these areas are really friendly and welcoming. There are some problem spots again like any other country in the world but nothing to deter you from having a good time there. I have gone out on tours, taken taxi rides and shopped in the open markets and no one ever bothered us. The vendors are a bit pushy sometimes but they mean no harm, after all they are trying to make a living. You can bargain with them and get some really cool souvenirs at great prices.
There are also some affluent areas where the houses are beautiful and you can sense the touch of class! I have been through some areas like that in the Kingston area and it is an amazement that there is such classy neighborhoods there. Disregard the stereotypes you hear about Jamaica that everywhere is crime ridden and unsafe. That's a BIG FAT LIE!!!
The Jamiacans that I came in contact with are really cool people and they like to chat and would sometimes give you tips on places to visit. I have made several friends there over the years and one such family is like my own family now. We just came back last month from visiting them and going to a resort.
There are numerous activities to enjoy in Jamaica: we climbed the Blue Mountain Peak (not for the faint of heart), we went to the hot springs at the Mineral bath in St. Thomas parish, we swam with the dolphins at Dolphin Cove in Ochie, we bamboo rafted on the Martha Brae river, we climbed the Dunns River falls, we swam at Frenchman's Cove, ate jerk at Boston Jerk in Portland, drove through Bamboo Allen. That's just some of the many things we have enjoyed in Jamaica.
Some really cool and affordable places to stay are: Point Village iresort in Negril (my personal favorite), Holiday Inn in Montego Bay & FDR Pebbles in trelawny. Oh we spent a night in the rustic cabin at Whitfield Hall (a stopover point before climbing the Blue Mountain).
On the all-inclusive resorts there are tons of daily activities and depending on your taste you may not want to leave the resort. I do advise a venture out to the open-air markets though because you get a lot of good deals and there are lots of beautiful arts and crafts for souvenir.
When traveling around there, use the same instincts as you would at home. You wouldn't go into an area if you think it is unsafe right? Well use that same judgement and you'll do fine. Also go with an open mind and respect for Jamaicans and Jamaica. Do not be disrespectful when you are there and you would have a wonderful time!
Enjoy your trip...:)

I spend about 4 months a year there... and I have no reason to go (work family or anything else) its just pure love.... jamaica society is really complicated but for anywone that wants to go as a tourist there is no need to try and find out too much... I traveld in a lot of places but no place I have seen was blessed by nature like jamaica was... stay in tourist areas and just stick to "comun sense" rules and you will have no problem... and as long as you dont make anybody think you are an idiot.... people are really nice

Yes got married there, and returned for our one year anniversary. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort area. Can't wait to go again. The staff is great. There is a lot of night life. Food/drinks all night/day. Water Sports etc. It's just wonderful. Oh, and the swim up pool bar, outstanding!!!

This is as good as one makes it, the people are very friendly, and make your vacation. Saying that you still have to go with a relaxed attitude. As every thing is very laid back, the people are very poor, and try to make a living by selling goods in tourist areas (montego bay, ochos rios, negril), they are not dangerous but can be very aggressive when trying to sell, as this is there only income. A polite no thanks can go a long way. It is not dangerous, but even still you must use common since. If you stay on the A/I resorts you will have no problem.
