you don't. is it a girl? if so they smell some days & there is nothing u can do about it. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY KIND OF BATH as suggested by other incompetent people. this can cause them to catch cold & die. clean the cage well with vinegar diluted with hot water & baking soda. RINSE WELL. make sure to scub the corners well with some kind of brush. make sure the hamster is somewhere safe while u do this. there is also a special spray at the petstore that u can spary in the pee corner-NOT ON the hamster. i'm assuming he dosent have wettail which would cause an odor and needs a vet immediately.

Hamster get ill very easily if they become wet. I would recommend that you buy some 'dust bath' for chinchillas and you hamster will be more then happy to roll around in it. It does a very good job of keeping them clean and they really enjoy it.

Well, there is a couple different thing's that you can do to keep them clean... First, they do a pretty good job of keeping themselves clean normally, but sometimes they fail there. If they do you can fill up the bathtub (only a couple inches, some can't swim) and let them swim around in it, getting wet. Then take them out of the water and let them air dry, just don't put them back into their sawdust filled home! Just let them run around in another contained area, and they will also clean themselves a little bit after all of this.

I've wondered that myself. I've never heard of anyone washing or bathing a hamster. One of the following links might help.
