I dropped a small boulder on it. The one's you put around your garden. I cut the fingernail right back, because it kept snagging on things and nearly coming off, so I cut it right back and it is only about a quarter of an inch long now. It looks really weird! Should I just leave it alone now?

Until the skin heals, you need to keep it clean and protected. Wash the finger at least twice a day with mild soapy water, dry it with a sterile guaze, apply a tiny dab of neosporin and cover it with a clean dressing like band aids or guaze and tape.

If it gets swollen, bright red, or you see yellow or green drainage at any time, see your doctor immediately.

Sounds like you hit the nail bed. You have to give the nail about three months to grow out.

Keep the nail short as it grows out. Expect that you will see a black nail, or portions, very soon.

leave it alone for now, but if it starts turning weird colors have a doctor check it out. sometimes when you injure the nail bed, you can get an infection.
