Spyware or viruses.
Go to www.filehippo.com and get AVG Anti-Virus, Spybot and AdAware.
Run all three.

Assumption here is you're using a Windows machine. If not, skip
If the slowness happened quickly, the cause is probably some application, driver, virus or malware. It could be anything from a recent patch file to spyware.
If the slowness is getting worse over months, it's probably an accumulation of files, startup routine, reg files and whole bunch of other stuff. In other words, some housekeeping is on order.
If you don't have any existing software to help sport spyware or virus, I'd suggest using one of the free online services. Microsoft actually has one that has some performance tuning options. It's worth a try. It does take a while for it to run through all its stuff. It's also still in beta.
You might also try to see if you have any programs or services that aren't needed on your machine during start up. You can get some advise from the articles below.

Certainly, slow PC are often caused by virus or other nasty things.
However, the slow speed is because you have many PROCESS running at the same time, most of them in the background.
Most of these are useless and just take memory space.
I suggest you get winpatrol from billp studio (winpatrol.com).
The little scotty will allow you to see ALL the startup programs and background services.
DELETE ALL startup programs and services (it is safe). Just keep Scotty. You PC will start-up in seconds instead of minutes (here from 15 minutes wait to 10 seconds for Win XP)
Remove MSN messenger (if you don't use it all the time!)
For adware and so on, XOFTSPY from paretologic.com is an excellent anti adware (but costs some 30$) .
Finally, you can remove Norton (who scans your documents even if you are off-line), and just use a firewall.

It sounds like your machine is infested with viruses and spyware. Get a good antivirus program (such as Norton antivirus) and a good spyware-remover program: I use Ad-Aware. Install and run them, and see what you find.
Also, invest in a good firewall: It will save you a ton of headaches!
Good luck!

Also if using Windows 98 go to start at bottom and click, go to programs, go to accessories, go to system tools, then to disk clean up.
