I once had a coati, aka a coatamundi.

He looked like a cross between a raccoon and a monkey, with a long pointed snout. He was wonderful...he litter trained, would walk on a leash, and was the friendliest, most intelligent and curious pet I've ever known. When I took him out for a walk on his leash, nearly nobody had ever seen a coati, so it was an immediate conversation starter. The downside was that he climbed on all the furniture and curtains, opened cabinet doors and drank whatever was in the bottles (He especially loved scotch).

He was wonderful. When I moved the place had a no pet policy, so I ended up giving him to the zoo, where he was for many years.

I think hedgehogs are rather unusual while still be affordable. But the most unusual pet I have ever met was an Arkansas Razorback hog. He was brought home by a friend of my mother's son. That son found him in the woods separated and only a few days old.

They named him Arnold (original, I know) and raised him in their house. He was the most intelligent thing! Of course he got to be too big so he was retired to a pig farm where he was used on selected sows to bring the stronger wild strain back into the breeding line. This was back in the 70's when this happened.

My dog, Oreo, because even though she never had puppies, she immediatly adopted my baby ferrets and made milk for them. My ferrets because even though they were weaned when we got them from the pet store and had never seen a dog in their lives, they suckled from her untill we stopped allowing them around Oreo long enough for all the milk to dry up. To this day she treats them like puppies, cleaning them and allowing them to wrestle her without hurting them, and she has even picked them up like a puppy without hurting them!
