We all believe what we believe so why do we sit here and argue day after day?
I'm serious.

Well, first of all, that's the problem. If you begin to state your point with the intent of changing someone's mind, that's how it comes across immediately and the other person is automatically set on the defensive. They begin focusing on their own arguments and not really listening to you~ just waiting for their chance to "respond", which really means, spew their side. I used to see things very one-sided when I was younger, and now I take the time to listen to people and really mull over what they've said, and sometimes it doesn't change anything for me but other times, it has...and all-in-all, in every case, at least I see their side, and we can agree to disagree...peacefully.

Lastly, when it comes to tough topics where people really SHOULD try and change the way they are thinking about something or the way they are doing something (a child with severe behavior issues for ex.) take the same approach, be calm, and listen. Nobody hears us when we scream.

Perhaps you have the wrong idea in mind when arguing your point. If your intent is the change minds, then you no doubt are a sadly disappointed child.

I never expect to change people's minds. They ask a question and I give them the straight truth answer. If they aren't smart or adult enough to go with it, then it is their problem not mine.

Expecting to change someone or someone's mind is a frustratingly futile waste of time.

What you say is very true, you can never change a racists view of anything. You cant confuse them with facts, they only believe what satisfies their own need to be validated by another racists.Their obvious low self esteems creates their need to feel they are some how superior to another, based on skin color or economic back ground, instead of seeing them as just another human being.I feel sometimes the sudo-intellectual can be the worst kind of racists because they only act racist when around others of their ilk. I personally find the obvious ignorant back water type of racism to be more honest, tho no less despicable.
But it is interesting to find out what people really think on
an anonymous entity such as this forum, when they think no one knows who they are.
Good question.thank you

First: I don't think it's obvious that we aren't going to change someone's mind.
Debate is designed to TRY to do just that.

Second: It's always good to make people think. Debate usually does that.

Third: Some people like making their opinions known. It's an ego thing.

Fourth: Sometimes it's fun and interesting to play devil's advocate to find out WHY someone feels as they do about a certain subject.

I do it because I have hope that even if I can change the mind of one or two people, that is a great accomplishment. Why? Because these people will have families and maybe one day have children. They can spread the word of truth to anyone they are connected with. I have hope...

See for yourself how this news clip to possibly change someones mind. If not that one, see the next link, a documentary:

It's sad that you think everyone is so closed minded that debate and discussion won't help.

I'm an optimist, that rarest of non-political parties that still believes we can make a difference for the better in people's lives. So, I keep trying to raise awareness, present different points of view, and try to get people to rationally discuss issues on the merits.

If I can help save just one person from being a sheep with a tape recorded, mindlessly repeating back what someone else told them to say, and help them grow to become someone who thinks for themself, then my time here is well spent.

Don't you think that arguing your point can make you stronger in your convictions? I know that talking politics and religion can somtimes seem like a dead end, but when you run across a question you can't answer you seek it out. I sometimes learn the most from the people I dissagree with.

we believe what we believe and feel strongly about issues and that's important.
free discourse on politics or issues is something that alot of men and women have fought and died for over the years.

Without that it would be like living in Iran or China or any number of African and South American countries, our comments would be censured and/or we would be picked up by authorities and
questioned or jailed.

So its a real important right that we exercise here

the point of 'debate' is not just to change someone's mind......

- it's also to let someone recognise and appreciate another person's point of view which has often not even been considered

- people can change others views simply by putting out another perspective

- it's about how you address problems questions etc and most of all about listening to one another

It may sound hyper cliched but sometimes someone needs to listen to them and act upon them....

Some of us do change other people's minds, and have our own minds changed by arguments. Maybe you're hanging out with the wrong crowd.
