im stuck on the entanglement level inside the prison. i have 3 auto rifles on tripods but the enemy keep knocking them over with grenades and i end up running around blasting away but just end up dead all the time. alyx keeps tellin me to make sure the tripods are up but when i try to pick them up i keep gettin shot !!!!!.can any1 offer me some help and advice

I set the tripods up to protect the door way on one of the prison cells.
I then get in the prison cell, and look out the door, shooting any guards I can see.
The tripods usually take out most of the guards, but when a guard gets in and knocks a tripod over, you have to kill him, rush out and set up the tripod again.
Save the game every time this happens and you set it up again succesfully.
After about ten tries you'll get it right !

I think I know where you mean and It's a tough level alright.
You need to locate them at the top of the stairs where you can stand them back up, but no where that they can get near enough to shoot you. Then keep in the shelter and let them do the work.
