Using the link provided by Southpaw, and thanks S. by the way, I learned that "Radhanath Sikdar, an Indian mathematician and surveyor from Bengal, was the first to identify Everest as the world's highest peak in 1852, using trigonometric calculations based on measurements made with theodolites from 240 km (150 miles) away in India. Before it was surveyed and named, it was known as Peak XV to the survey team."

Someone else was correct when they pointed out there's some dispute as to the actual height. Read the Wiki article, it's very interesting. Also, note that there are other more older names to the mountain. Chomolungma is the Tibetan name. The Nepalese I believe claim rights to name it as it's on their territory. They call it Sagarmatha. There's also an Indian name, which is said to be old. Devigiri or Devadurga.

8,848 m or 29,028 feet
Although it grows at a rate of around 3mm per year, weathering is at about the same rate so the height remains fairly constant. Some sources do say that the height is slightly different, though, due to discrepancies in measuring points, such as whether to include the height of the ice and snow on top of it. Since this is included on most mesurements for other mountains, the standard height used is 8848m - there are about 3-5 m of ice so the height of just the rock is anout 8844m.

the official height of mount Everest is 29,035 feet.however, the actual height fluctuates from this measurement because the ice at the peak is constantly melting and refreezing.
