I just did a virus scan on my computer and it said I had some Trojandownloader.win32.purityscan affecting my regedit file and I wanted to know if I could just delete the file to get rid of the virus or if it was a necessary file for my computer. If it is a necessary file, can someone tell me where I can get something to clean it for free? I used a free online virus scan and in order to clean it with it you need to pay and I don't really have the money right now to do so. Any information would be greatly appreaciated! Thank you all in advance.

Yes, regedit is necessary. It is your registry editor. If you don't know what that is, however, then don't use it! Regedit is used to make deep changes in your computer operating system and applications, and tiny errors can lead to very bad consequences

You should not delete it either, because you may need to access and run this file in the future when you are receiving technical support via telephone or e-mail. In any event, deleting this file will not remove the virus.

Grisoft offers an excellent antivirus program, and they even offer a powerful free version to home users. Download this, run it, and I bet you'll be fine.

DO NOT DELETE REGEDIT!!!

Regedit is used to view the registry for your computer, which is absolutely necessary. Viruses almost always affect the registry, but the registry *is* an integral part of the system. You can actually use Regedit to totally control your computer, and even get rid of some viruses, if you know how to use it.

Yes. You need to download an anti-virus program. A good one is AVG (get it free of www.filehippo.com)

Then start your PC in safe mode (hit F8 a couple times when your PC is first starting)

Then run the scan.

regedit is short for registry edit - your registry is where EVERYTHING is... if you start deleting files from there and aren't familiar w/it you'll end up rendering your computer useless...

i use AVG Anti-virus Free Edition - so far it has done a great job of keeping my desktop virus -free...

check it out...
