Bettas CAN go with other fish. Mine is with some glass cat fish, algae eaters, gouriami, and swoardtails. He gets along fine. (just keep an eye on em' at first) If yours in in a vase (i highly DONT reccomend this), they might accept ghost shrimp, or african dwarf frogs(mine do). I heard stories of bettas accepting fish but killing ghost shrimp(so be carefull). two male bettas WILL fight.

Yes, bettas CAN be a part of a community tank, but they must be monitored very closely, especially at first. I'd recommend only docile, short-finned, community fish like tetras or mollies. No long-finned fish that your betta may mistake for another betta, or any other agressive fish.
Your options are very limited if you're looking for tankmates that don't need aeration systems. You can add a live plant (java fern is the best because you tie it to a rock and it doesn't need to be planted in the gravel), an apple snail, or maybe an African dwarf frog, but some particularly picky bettas may take great pleasure in nipping at even these tankmates.
But, it's in the best interest of your betta that he remains a loner. Bettas don't need or particularly desire company. There's also the question of space. I wouldn't even consider a frog or a snail unless your tank is 5 gallons. I've seen many bettas successfully incorporated into a community tank. It's possible, but I've also seen many bettas who attack or get attacked by tank mates.

Generally male bettas are too territorial to put up with tank mates in 5 gallons or under. Without a heater, and aeration most tank mates would not survive. About the only tank mate that I find works is an apple/mystery snail. (That said one of my betta is named Snail Slayer.) Keep in mind that bettas don't get lonely. The mates are loners that like being alone. (Note that the female are pretty agressive too, and shouldn't be kept together outside of a big tank. Females and males can't be kept together.)

Safe Tank Mates
Because of their attractive fins, male bettas are often the targets of much bullying, like angelfish if you've kept them. For this reason they are often kept by themselves. They do fine this way, but if you'd rather keep your fish in a community tank, you do have some options. First, no two male bettas should ever be kept together. They will fight, and be in a constant state of stress. Females may be kept together or in a tank with most any community fishes, but provide plenty of hiding spots, as they have been known to fight, too. A male and female betta shouldn't be kept together except in a breeding situation or they will likely also fight. Suitable tank mates are non-aggressive and non-territorial, and must need the same tropical water conditions as the betta. Keep in mind that most fish will need more aeration in the water than bettas. It may take some work to find a happy medium for all your fish. Try guppies, mollies, or any of the tetras. Algae eaters should be avoided unless necessary, as they may try to "eat" off your betta's fins. You may also consider other aquatic animals such as snails or African dwarf frogs. Regardless of how gentle a fish you buy to go with your betta, be on the lookout for any rogue fin-nippers and be prepared to move them to a separate tank. If your betta's fins appear ragged or broken soon after a new addition, take action to remove the offender and keep the water clean to prevent infection.
