everything listed previously is pretty cool. the galleria is really nice, but REALLY expensive, so think of it more as sight-seeing rather than shopping. the museum of fine arts has the famous portrait of washington on display right now, and the natural science museum has body worlds 3, which is an exhibit that shows the human body from the inside out - real human bodies. also at the mns is the butterfly pyramid (smaller than the rain forest pyramid in galveston, but it isn't in galveston, and it costs less) and imax theater. the musuem itself is nice too. instead of hitting the galleria, you might consider hitting the montrose/westheimer area. there's nothing you can't find there, and not all of it is outrageously pricey, plus, montrose is where the color of town is most vibrant. don't go too late at night ... old town spring is also great but keep in mind it's a good 45 minute drive from central houston. for other cool shopping, check out rice village. the kemah boardwalk is also nice, but also expensive, and a lot of it is outside activities, and the heat index today is 104, 106 tomorrow. while you are here, pick up a copy of the houston press. it's free and available verywhere - they are the authority on what's cool and what's hot. the astros are awesome, but unless you LOVE football, i'd avoid the texans (don't anyone take it personally, i know they won the other night, but come on). downtown has been updated, and has a lot of slick night clubs.
i've lived here most of my life. people are mostly very friendly, but be sure you know where you're going (this can be confusing here). crime has recently skyrocketed, and it wasn't too great before that either. also, we are a big big city, and it can easily take an hour to go 30 miles, even on a freeway. the local news web sites are www.click2houston.com and www.khou.com and www.abc13.com - check them for traffic reports.
most tourist stuff is actually outside of the city (i.e. kemah, moody gardens, old town spring, katy mills mall, sugarland, etc). have fun while you're here and keep cool!

Try to catch an Astra's or Texan game. For shopping go to the Galleria or Old Town Spring (north side of Houston). Go to Galveston and walk in the historic district known as the Strand, visit the tall sailing ship Ellissa, Schlitterbahn Water Park, Moody Garden's Pyramids which include a rain forest, man made beach, IMAX, and more. The NASA tour is lots of fun. The Kemah boardwalk is a great place to spend a relaxing evening of dining, carnival games, boutiques shopping or watching the boats go by. If you like museums try the Fine Arts Museum, the Holocaust Museum, The Museum of Natural Science which currently has the "Body Works", exhibit which is drawing huge numbers of visitors. It is not for the faint of heart though, because it is actual human remains showing what disease can do, showing the muscles on the skeleton, and more. If you like golf, there are plenty of courses around. You should be able to find plenty of things to do.

Houston has been my home for over 30 years. You must visit the Galleria shopping mall (indoor ice skating rink and high end shopping), Nasa Space Center (it's a space amusement park), attend a musical, play or concert at Jones Hall or Hobby Center, do the architectural walking tour of downtown Houston, take a day or two and visit Moody Gardens in Galveston, visit the Contemporary Art Museum and take a bike ride through Rice University, attend an Astros Baseball game or Texans football game, eat out - Pappasito's Mexican Food, The Strip House (upper crust steak house), Guadalara Mexican Food, James Coney Island Hot Dogs, Taste of Texas Steak House (you can wear jeans here and it's full of authentic Texas memorabilia), Pappadeaux Seafood, anyway lots of great restaurants here.
The Don't List includes:
Do not attempt to drive on I-10 (aka Katy Freeway) on the weekends - heavy construction and closures every weekend. Do not get on I-610 without realizing it is a Loop - you can circle the city forever - this has happened to many visitor for many years. Do not ride a bus - we have a sorry excuse for a transit system even though it has improved. Do not walk or drive in front of the Transit Train in downtown Houston on Main street - many lives have been lost since it was installed. Rent a car - you can wait forever for a taxi.
Mostly be ready to meet friendly people compared to elsewhere. Enjoy your trip.

There really is alot to do in Houston .. It just depends on what you are in to. Downtown has some good restaurants, bars, etc.., Astros games are worth catching, The Galleria area is nice with some good places to eat and shop, there are some good museums (arts, sciences), the Houston zoo is nice, Galveston has a pretty cool atmosphere, Schlitterbaun opened a water park in Galveston next to Moody Gardens, The Woodlands area is nice, and there are usually alot of good concerts to go to.

Hi, my wife and I just moved here from Ok and our favorite place to eat is the Melting Pot on westheimer! Kind of pricey, but AWESOME fondue and very nice atmosphere. We also recently went to the Science Museum and right now through Sept. 9 (I think) they have the body worlds exhibit, which is totally cool. Oh, after the Melting Pot, check out the galleria and the ice skating rink inside! Kemah is also nice.

I like to introduce my visitors to the great living here. As you take in some of the must see things I hope you have some time to visit some of our diversity. Vietnamese food is great here. We have a such a great variety of places to shop.
While you are here if you have the time you should consider a visit to Galveaston as well as San Antonio. Each can be traveled to and enjoyed in a day.
The following should be helpful!
Enjoy your visit!
