Edgar Albert Guest (August 20, 1881-August 5, 1959)

He was born in Birmingham, England and moved to the U.S. with his family in 1891. Starting in 1895, he went to work for the Detroit Free Press. Eventually, he worked his way up to a reporter. With the consent of the Free Press, he started writing daily poems that became syndicated in over 250 newspapers throughout the U.S. His first verse was published on December 11, 1898. As a result, he became known as the "Poet of the People." He was greatly admired for his simple poems. He also hosted a weekly radio program from 1931 until 1942 and, in 1951, a TV show for NBC. He was made Poet laureate of Michigan on March 2, 1952. He has been the only one to hold that title. He has 20 books published of his work. He died in Detroit.

The only book of his I own is "Just Folks" which was published in 1917. It was given to my great grandmother in 1919 as a Christmas present. I do enjoy his simplicity. He made his poems so that everyone could understand and enjoy them. Unfortunately, I cannot find the book at this, otherwise I would have given you an example one of my favorite poems.

Edgar Allan Poe

Alone
by Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
