Where did you hear that?
The only thing that is dangerous about tampons is Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS effects about 1 in 100,000 women world wide. TSS is linked to tampons, but not exclusive to use. Not only can you develop TSS from other things besides tampons, not all women are even susceptible to the bacteria that causes it. If you were to leave a tampons, female condom, diaphragm, or anything else inside your body for an overly extended period of time, you have the risk of developing TSS. This means that a female should use the lowest absorbency that she can, no more than 8 hours between changing it, but ideally every 4 hours. Education of young women and girls who use tampons greatly reduces this risk every year. It used to be a lot higher because women would buy the highest absorbency and leave them in for 10 hrs, 12 hrs, or longer. This is the link between tampons and TSS.
If you are talking about the urban legends of asbestos and other harmful chemicals in tampons, it's a crock. It isn't true. There are no truth to these rumors.
Go to http://www.snopes.com and look it up if you want.
Have you ever used them? Doesn't sound like it. Buy a box and read the pamphlet that comes in them that tells you all this stuff.

Based on the phrasing of your question it's because...
Most of the troops in Iraq are men and don't know how to use tampons.

Because they just happen to be convenient and dying from using them is not a guarantee. People die all the time from driving cars but millions still do it every day.

they don't die I rarely doubt. Toxic shock syndrome is when it's left in there for a LOONNNNGGG period of time and obsorbes into the body. If everyone died from it, I don't think too much more people would be having sex because you might get sick and die from having a penis in your vagina too long. (lol)

I feel that a lot of women use them because they are discreet and you can wear anything a long as you have a backup. It is more comfortable because you can't feel the flow.

This is completely untrue. Toxic Shock Syndrome is extreme rare. Where did you get your statistics from???? Don't you think if this were true, tampons would have been banned!!

Before I respond to your statement, I would like to see the source of your claim. I have SERIOUS doubts about its validity.
