Are they just the bastard children of colons? We are told that grammarians tell us that we should use semicolons. Who are these grammarians anyway? Do you think they really exist or are they just a story told by the establishment to keep us down? Explain

I don't know who the grammarians are, but semicolons are a cross between a colon and a comma.

For example, you could use it to combine two separate sentences as follows:
I wonder where she is; she's been gone for a long time.

You could also use it to separate a series (like a comma) although commas are used in each individual item as follows:
She gave me a choice of either: staring a dog-waling business, feeding them, and playing with them; watering the plants and cleaning the house; or redesigning the whole house, hiring people, and paying the bills.

However, it is kind of awkward using it in the second way. (By the way, the second sentence is kind of random, but don't pay attention to that)

It's used as a pause in a sentence,
instead of "errraaahhh",
or, "Ya know'.
