I recommend HP or Compaq for thier 24x7 help and extensive web resources.
1. The first step is to list all you wish to do with the computer.
2. The programs needed to do the above.
3. The hardware requirements of the programs.
Now you have a base system with specific requirements. Find an HP or Compaq on sale.
Hint; If you need MS Office or other expensive applications, it is sometimes MUCH cheaper to buy the applications ALREADY INSTALLED on the computer (not installed later but part of the PC package). You also get the benefit of support for everything from the one vendor.
I find that most other manufacturers have flimsy cases. You probably should get a business class laptop from www.hp.com with XP Pro and not Home Edition.
You might wish to wait for Windows Vista to be released OR make sure the laptop is Vista ready. HP will walk you through your choices after you have the above list.
I would also recommend trying to touch real laptops at various stores to see how you like the design of the keyboard etc.
