iTunes is the application (and pretty much the only application, there may be some third-party material out there but it wouldn't be well-known) that you need to use. You install it into the computer that you want to link your iPod to, and iTunes manages the "library" of music that you update your iPod with.
As for how you get music, that's up to you--iTunes has an integrated interface into Apple's iTunes Music Store, where you can buy music tracks for about $0.99 each. You can also "rip" your CD's into your iTunes library. And lastly, if you download mp3 files from other sources (peer-to-peer, free mp3 websites, whatever), adding them to iTunes is as simple as dragging the files' icons into the iTunes window.
If your library is bigger than the amount of music your iPod can hold, you'll have to use one of several ways to select which songs are put on your iPod, but basically iTunes is the program you use to do this.

Okay, so go on a serch type in itunes, then click on the itunes website. There is a Tab that says download and you click that. then you click download free button then a pop up will show . Click on run, then click it again, then it will start and of course you agree to terms above. When its finished, you could connect you ipod and go on to the itunes music store and buy songs you want. then you have to make an apple account and they charge what you but in a credit card account. Another option is importing Your CD's to your ipod. Just insert your CD then itunes will open it up then check which songs you want then click import at the top right hand corner. After it says download complete, disconnect your ipod then reconnect and if it says do not disconnet, that means its downloading the songs. Good lUck!!!
