The same as the square root of any other number.
One of two equal factors whose product is the original number.
If x*x = y then we say that x is the 'square root' of y
In most cases the square root of a number is an 'irrational' number (one that can't be expressed exactly by a quotient of two integers) so we usually use decimal approximations.
√7 = +/- 2.6457513110645905905016157536393
Why +/-? It's because the product of two negative numbers is positive. When you ask what is the square root of something, it's usually the positive root that is of interest (which is why it's called the 'principle' square root) But the negative one is also frequently used in science and engineering problems.

If you are doing math homework for school, most math teachers prefer that irrational numbers be left as irrational numbers. In that case, you would write the square root sign over the 7. This is the same idea as leaving pi in an answer instead of writing 3.14. It is more accurate.

?(x + 7) + 5 = x ?(x + 7) = x - 5 x + 7 = x^2 - 10x + 25 0 = x^2 - 11x + 18 0 = x^2 - 2x - 9x + 18 0 = x (x - 2) - 9 (x - 2) 0 = (x - 9) (x - 2) so x - 9 = 0 or x - 2 = 0 x = 9 or x = 2 x = 2 or 9

No one yet has given you a good answer.
The square root of 7 is the side length of a square with an area of 7 square units. If you made a square with an area of 7 square feet, the length of the sides would all be the square root of 7 feet long.

the exact answer is the square root of 7, anything else is an approximation since square root of 7 is irrational.

Actually there are two of them--one is the negative of the other. They are both irrational, so as someone else here said, any decimal representation of them is necessarily approximate.
