A PCI Wireless Card is an adapter used for connecting to a Wireless Network. In order to use a Wireless Adapter card instead of a USB Adapter you need to install the PCI Adapter Card Slot into your computer.
There are two parts in using a PCI Wireless Adapter Card. The PCI Slot hardware and the Adapter Card hardware.
Using a USB Wireless Adapter is far and away the easiest method of connecting to a Wireless Network. However, many companies are moving towards using Wired or Wireless Card Adapters instead of or in addition to USB Adapters.
The Wireless Adapters with the highest IEEE connection and range specs are becoming more common as PCI Cards which slide into a PCI Slot for the Wirless Card Adapters.
Many computers are shipping with CardBus or PCI Card Slots with the Wireless Adapter already installed. You need to find out which Wireless Ethernet IEEE Standard it supports-a-b-g or the newest but not yet a standard-n.
The IEEE standard a is mostly used at businesses and only is compatable with the a standard as it is on a different frequency than b,g and n standards. The best Adapters are those with Mix and Match Standards, with a,b, and g. This way a laptop can be used at work, at home and while traveling at HotSpots. Currently there is not a mix with n in it. I am waiting for a laptop with n capabilites as that is the standard I use at home.
If you have a need to hook up a Laptop at work or a business, don't go with n as it is not included in the mix and match with a,b and g combined. You can put n at your home and use a Laptop with a standard but remember your home network will be slowed to the slowest standard you hook into your network. So, if you have a Mix and Match with a,b and g, your network will have the g connection speed while it has the Laptop connected to the network. Just keep that in mind when shopping around for an Adapter Standard.
So, a PCI Wireless Card is actually a Wireless Adapter Card that slids into a PCI Slot. This is one Wi-Fi Network Adapter type. Other types include the following:
External USB uses a connection at a USB Port and is used for both Desktop or Laptop computers.
Internal PCI card uses a connectioin in a PCI Slot and is used with Desktop computers. (This is the one discussed above)
Interanl CardBus uses a CardBus Slot and is used in Laptop computers.
Hope this helps in some way. If you like you can get this book: "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking" by Mark Edward Soper
The book is a very easy to read and understand book, with most everything you need to know about this subject. It is not a big book, you could probably read it in two days without reading non-stop. You can skip ahead at any time to the subject you need, but I highly reccommend reading from beginning to the end for those who have little of no knowlege of this subject. The book has extra material on adding other things to a network like Game Consoles, live t.v like TiVo, DvD players, security systems, stereos, etc. It is a good book.
I hope you find the informaiton you need, and have a good day!

PCI Wireless Network cards connect directly into a free PCI slot on a PC. They are relatively easy to install and are the best choice for networking PCs permanently using Wireless.
