i have used lots of things
ammonia and a little dish soap
shampoo
shampoo and baking soda
dish soap and baking soda
bleach and shaved hand soap
liquid hand soap
ammonia and HOT HOT water
409, kitchen cleaners, generic orange kitchen cleaner
when i was in college i would buy weed instead of household products, ended up trying everything possible to get clothes clean....the ammonia don't fade colors & gets things really clean
i use ammonia instead of color safe bleach now....works better and is a lot cheaper

I have read the other answers above. What ever you choose, do NOT choose a mixture of chemicals. Even the products that seem harmless can be toxic when mixed with others. You would do better to use a small amount of household cleaner, Mr. Clean is the brand on my shelf. Most of these cleaners even print instructions on the bottle for laundry.

Lysol or perhaps dish detergent, if you don't use too much of the latter. For a while when there was a flu epidemic running around my work place, I washed my work uniforms in lysol as soon as I got home. I still got sick, but not as badly as some of the others.

If you are doing it by hand, bath soap.
I agree with answer above: If you plan to use your machine, wait until you can pick up laundry detergent because over sudsing can damage your machine.

You don't need any. Just wash your clothes with water in the washer machine because water already haves minerals in the water to help clean clothes. But in the meanwhile you should go and buy some detergent, lol.
