Close your ears to all of the mention of c-sections. I don't know why people think they are so necessary. 33 % of babies are born by c-section. That is one out of every three. If only the women/babies that needed a c-section were given one it would be more like 5 %.
To answer your question. YES! getting an internal exam during your pregnancy really tells you nothing. You could be checked and be 5 cm and still not go into labor for 2 weeks or you can be check and found to be totally closed and go into labor in 3 hours.
How soft your cervix is tells you more than how many cm. you are dilated. Did the midwife/doctor say how much you have thinned out? (effaced) How many weeks pregnant are you?
A wonderful way to help soften the cervix is to have sex. Make sure that your mate climaxes inside of you. The semen has something in it that will help to soften the cervix. It also helps if you climax as well. Not really to soften your cervix but it helps contract the uterus. If your body and the baby are both ready then it will help you go into labor.
There is also something called "evening primrose oil" that you can buy at any health food store that you can take orally to help your cervix soften. Only take it in the later two weeks of pregnancy (if you are 38 weeks or past)
Good luck. It won't be too much longer.

Yes you can still go into labor even though you have not dilated it's just once the labor starts your cervix needs to start dilating in order to get the baby out and if it doesn't start then they usually give you something to make the contractions come stronger which is suppose to help you dilate and if all else fails the they will give you a C-Section.

yes! contractions will open up the cervix may take awhile but it will happen.Me it took 14 1/2 hours with the first one and 14 with the second. Just depends on your body. In some cases like my mom she was in labor for 24 hours and never dialated so she had a c-section.

yes you can... some women don't dialate untill they start labor... usually first time mothers. But if labor doesn't progress and usually be over with within 24 hours it is too overwelming for the mother and sometimes the baby so they will give the mother a c-section.
