Seems to me that a high gas price would cause a reduction in consumption and hence lead to lower world crude prices while helping to reduce our huge deficit. See anything wrong with my reasoning?

Oh I assure you I've thought it thru. Would you rather pay out government or Saudi Arabia so they can support terrorists? Every dollar that goes there causes more dollars here to be spent for defense. Use you brain.

We think cars should be banned and people should start walking and riding bikes. It is a great way to lose weight and keep money in your pocket.

A higher price would reduce consumption if gas is an elastic demand. If gas is something that people have to have and are going to buy no matter what (inelastic), then higher prices will lead to riots before they lead to reduced consumption. I think (my opinion, I don't have facts) that people wouldn't mind the tax if they could see it amounting to something, e.g. better roads and road maintenance. As it is, gas tax, like all tax, gets dumped into one giant slush fund which the government dips into with no accountability and the public perception, not necessarily incorrect, is that they are simply funding governmental largesse. Here's a thought (I'm not sure this would "solve" anything) - parse the tax out from the price of gas and have a separate set of number dials for the tax on the gas pump so the consumer can see that their tank of gas cost them $25 @ $1/gal + $1/gal tax @ 100% (for instance). Then, when their next fill up costs more, they can check the separate dials and see if the price has actually gone up or if it's the tax that has gone up.

Do you know the rate of gasoline tax as it stands? A good portion of the money that is paid for a gallon of gas is tax money.
thanks, but no thanks. Gas is already around $3 a gallon and I'm still driving, not enjoying it as much, but, I have to get the kids places they can't go on foot.

No: what I believe we should do is to put priority legislation in place to triple our alternate energy sources. Solar and wind energy, greasel engines--give automakers incentives for faster electric and solar-powered cars. Switzerland uses nuclear power so why can't we have safe use of such?- is it because off terrorist threats?
