Santa clause evolved from st.nick, who would give gifts to children of poor families, who couldn't afford to buy their children toys or clothes or whatever, soon the rich people decided that it wasn't fair and started getting stuff for their own kids about the same time that st.nick would. that's why Santa brings gifts in the middle of winter instead of some other time of the year... like... April...
