I work in retail and these people want me to assist them in finding merchandise but they can't/won't get off the phone and then they get huffy when I talk to them trying to get information about their needs and what it is they are looking for.

It's just weird. They ask me for help then act as if I'M the one inturrupting them.

Retail sucks!
Get out as soon as you can!

We hear more and more that "customer service is not what it used to be".

Customers aren't what they used to be, either!

I think that cell phone ownership has risen so fast ( many more people have them now compared to 15 years ago) that our society has not had a chance to establish proper etiquette for cell phone usage. People still view phone usage as a private conversation between themselves and the person on the other end, which for decades has taken place in the privacy of the home or office. Our society is fast moving to a electronic-connection rather than personal-connection with the other inhabitants of our world. Right now, we're in a transition,: we still value that personal touch from a human sales person but are also used to dealing wth automated systems that have made some of the mundane everyday chores easier. Our society just hasn't caught up with technology. Hence, the rudeness/selfishness of talking on a cell in front of other people.

Many people think the technology world is more important than the real one, or something stupid like that. Just patiently wait until they get off the phone, and if they say, "Why aren't you helping?", try something like, I'm sorry, there's a store policy against wasting my time and cell phone minutes at the same time. It is deifnitely weird and try not to take it personally, they're the ignorant ones.

Those people are RUDE and arrogant. They take the phrase "The Customer Is Always Right" as a permission to be as dam.med nasty to the retail clerks as they want.

You the clerk who is making less than ten bucks an hour just has to take it....You know the customer is always right even when they are wrong.

Guess you'll just have to suffer until the retail environment improves and realizes the customer isn't always right.

Around where I live, San Francisco, a lot of retail will not wait on you if you are on the phone. It is usually posted in the store. There are also some restaurants that block cell phone signals.

That is one of my top pet peeves when dealing with the public. I usually wait for them to get off the phone before I answer any questions. Or better yet go to the next person. Then I say "Let me know when you're not so busy".

Because the vast majority of people are self-obsessed, ignorant f*ckers! I work with the public too and my faith in people as a whole has been put severely to the test. In fact im starting to find that I just dont like the public at all!

Cauz they don't need help. all they are trying to do is make evryone around them feel that they are most imp and busy ppl.
the same thing they might be able to find themselves if they get off their phone and look for it. but they want service from everyone without any qestions which is impossible.
I have told you why they did it now solution is the one and only-letting them know that they need to get off the phone and talk about their need. you can tell them that with patience and/or with little angry face. now that's up to You!!!!!!! LOL...... good luck!!!!!!

Here's what I used to do- If they came to the counter while talking on the phone I'd say "Hi", but nothing more. I'm only acknowledging their presence. If they started to ask for help, I'd tell them I would be happy to help them when they were ready. If they persisted and said they were ready, I'd tell them, "Go ahead and finish your call. I'll help you when you're through." Some got mad, but I don't care. Their behavior is rude, selfish, and boorish. I would not help them while they were on the phone. It's dehumanizing to me.

Good Luck! Peace.

I think the core of our problem is that deep down inside we are all lonely. Talking to someone on the phone all the time makes us feel as if we are not alone. It is rude to be talking while a clerk is helping you and I encounter this all the time in my job also. I

Because they are self-centered, spoiled idiots who think that they are special. They have no regard for your time and expertise because they are too busy acting like the world revolves around them.

Don't let it get to you.
