Why is this? The USB port is a motherboard one.
On the previous pc the pc would crash if the printer was not on the motherboard USB port.
Any ideas for a new solution. I might use my other one with cheaper clone cartridges and print over the network also.

Many years ago in the dark ages of PC's the answer to this would definatly have been "They are usuing the same intterupt". If you are using Windows 95 or ME then check that first. Windows XP however is much better at handling interrupts. It is possible that the driver software of your printer is hogging the interrupts or using the same communication address as the PS2 port. Try checking for newer printer drivers, if that fails buy a new printer.

interrupts are conflicting

Control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager

check out any devices in the list that have little flags on them. Re-allocate the interrupts if you can to stop them from arguing with each other.

If you can't do that, go online and download latest drivers for both printer and mouse.

Make sure all drivers are installed for both devices. If your devices are conflicting try using them in different ports. Good luck!
