You may be on to something, but I think there's a loop hole. I used to manage a video store and there was a Disney Movie that was not G nor PG. For some reason I believe it was R, it was a scary movie done years ago. So if this one wasn't PG-13, you are right. Can't recall what the movie was though, sorry. You can use five more points to ask if anyone knows.

That's because Disney used to reserve the "Disney" brand for its tamer, family-friendly movies; Pirates of the Caribbean does have some of that intense action-adventure stuff, but it's so tied-in to the Disney (from the theme park attraction that inspired it) that it only made sense to release it under the Disney brand.

But Disney has (and still does) produce less family-oriented movies that rate a PG-13 or worse--it just does/did so under the names of different studios that they either owned/co-owned at the time (Miramax, for a time), or created as divisions of the company (Hollywood Pictures, Touchstone Pictures) expressly for the purpose of *not* attaching the Disney name to movies that don't have that warm-and-fuzzy Disney quality, like the teen comedy "Stick It" or the upcoming dance movie "Step Up."

That's interesting, as my friends and I were discussing earlier, Pirates doesn't really seem like a Disney Movie, so I guess it's a big breakthrough on Disney's part, for good or for bad.

That's true. However, some of the earliest animated movies, like Snow White, were given a G rating and the witch died at the end of it. Pretty scary stuff for a little kid.

That is only because they normally release such films under Touchstone Video. It is owned by Disney for that purpose. the point is that times are changing and they are trying to cut down on studio costs.
