Iran could set it off -- if, with its martyrdom and Armageddon complexes it does something nuclear.

The real question is, who is benefiting by the continual promotion of this idea?
1. Political leaders who know their approval ratings go up when there is a war.
2. Large corporations that receive essentially unregulated and seemingly unending funds to build or maintain the military.
3. Religious leaders who know donations increase if people believe the end of the world is near.
4. Oil companies, who want unrestricted access to major oil reserves in the Middle East (why is it that wars everywhere else draw yawns, but wars in the middle east make everyone start talking about WW3?)
Anyone I missed?

Some say WW III already happened. It was the cold war. True the two main players never came to blows, but they had a lot of proxy wars (Angola civil war, Iran/Iraq conflict, Nicaragua) going on, plus a few in which they were involved directly (Vietnam for the U.S., Afghanistan for U.S.S.R.).
Currently we are in WW IV. We live in an ever increasing global world. The current Israeli/Palestinian-Lebanon conflict is linked to the Iraqi war, which is linked to Afghanistan, which is linked to the Pakistani/India tensions which is linked to the India/China tensions, which in turn is linked to the situation in North Korea. I won't go into specific links (would be writing and researching the whole weekend) but you can link pretty much any conflict nowadays to another.
The good news about all of this is that WW III was less devastating than WW II and WW IV is less (so far) than WW III.
