Many South East Asians consider showing affection openly in public to be shameful in some way and is generally discouraged, more so when the other person is a westerner.

I lived with a filipina for 8 years and we hardly ever showed open affection to each other in public after she explained to me early on that it felt bad to her as that is the way she was taught to act whilst growing up.

Now I am living with a different Filipina and although we show affection openly in public here in Hong Kong, when we travel to Philippines together its definately subdued affection.....I think people view her as a prostitute if she is seen showing open affection towards me in the Philippines.

There you are again! How many questions do you have to post before the answers enter in that little brain of yours? Can you not respect our culture? No respect for our culture means no respect for our elders and the people. You dont possess a value that fits to become a husband of any filipina. So go and find someone of your the same color.

In cities like Manila, it is acceptable. There are still provinces here where people are really conservatives when it comes to such practice. Especially in provinces where religion is of paramount concern of the citizenry (ie. Mindanao and other Islamic provinces).

Yes..in the provinces, there is a high regard for the family name..people knows almost everyone..when you do that..its a shame on the family name..people would not consider it as "Maria is kissing John in public" but, "The daughter of Pedro is kissing John in public"...You know what I mean?

Its a shame on the girls family, specially her father, not on herself.

It depends on the location. Holding hands is not a problem. Kissing should be done in private, except for a kiss hello or goodbye.
