No, not too much; 800.000 killed by machete in 1994, refugee camp of 1.200.000, another 500.000 roaming around town, ermm, 3wars, 8 looting and raping sprees in the last 5 years, still some 4.000 fanatic assh"les roaming round in the woods surrounding our cozy lil town, killing men and taking women away as sex slaves. No big news round Lake Kivu. Come back next year, when we'll worry bout cans of coke on planes...
Not to mention the 30 girls going missing Every Day of the Week that God makes...

Hell yes! I live in south-west Hertfordshire and two weeks before Christmas last year, there was an enormous explosion and raging inferno at Buncefield Oil Refinery and fuel depot. It turned out to be the biggest ever fire in peace-time Europe.

Remember the moment well. I had been out for the day and had walked home from the train station in a thick blanket of fog, so I was very tired. In fact, I was dead to the world, until about 6.03am. There came this loud, thunderous, booming noise which seemed to 'move across' the sky like an extraordinary clap of thunder. The whole house shook, and woke me up good and proper. As I had been asleep, I was very unsure what it was.

My Dad thought I had fallen out of bed and came to see if I was okay. I thought he had fallen out of bed and went to see if he was okay. My Mum was just plain disorientated, and we all 'congregated' haphazzardly on the landing, wondering what the hell it was. I thought something had struck the house, but there were car alarms going off outside, so dismissed it as thunder and went back to bed. Twenty minutes later, there were two further thunderous booms, and the sound of sirens. It was something a lot more serious than thunder!

About twenty minutes after that, my brother's girlfriend phoned up. She was just about to start her shift with the police, and they had all been called to Hemel Hempstead to evacuate the area, as the oil refinery had just 'gone up.' I switched on the TV to find out more, and it was the priority story on every major news channel. The blast had been heard and felt, hundreds of miles away as the shock waves had been trapped under the blanket of fog and radiated outwards - like an atomic bomb in reverse.

I looked outside in the direction of the refinery, and could see the orange flare from the fireball, hundreds of feet up in the sky. For a few days afterwards, a thick column of smoke passed over the area (making for some memorable photographs on newspaper front pages) until the fire burnt itself out.

The fire brigades did superbly well to isolate the blaze and bring it under control. Now hopefully they will think twice before closing down Radlett Fire Station.

Well, I don't know if this counts. But, The MOTHMAN PROPHESIES (you know, the movie with Richard Gere) happened in my hometown. It was pretty big news at the time and now there is a major motion picture about it.
