Please don't say "because every rock and roll band uses guitars as their main instruments". I'm asking WHY they all use them, how did they get popular in the first place?

I'm not sure I always thought the drums was the instrument for rock and roll. But I guess you're right. They are kind of like a symbol for Rock & Roll.I don't know why though.

Not a very good answer but the best I could do.

The guitar has been around since ancient times. It is the most versatile of all the instruments, in that you can alter its sound by amplification and you can distort the sound by various peddles that attach to the amp. When it comes to rock and roll, there is no other instrument that gives you that bluesy, rhythmic and driving LOUD sound. Oh granted the voice is paramount, but what other instrument can complement the perfect voice? Guitars set the stage--the mood of a song. There's just something about watching a guitarist and his instrument become one. It is as if the guitar is an extension of the musician. It's an amazing and moving experience to see the two coming together. You can feel the emotions of the player and when he stops playing, all you want to do is rise up out of your seat and cheer him on to playing more. You can't get enough of it. That's why they call the great guitar players like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Steve Vie (I probably misplelled Steve's name and I apologize) , Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen "guitar gods". That's a title that is hard to come by.

My son plays in a band. His instument of choice is the guitar. I can't tell you how great it is to listen to him day in and day out. And think--it's always a live performance that I'm hearing. There's always some kind of surprise in the mix.

It was an inexpensive instument that poor people could either buy or make. Rock and Roll developed from the blues played mainly by poor blacks in the south. This is so many rock songs have blues chords in them. Mostly it was an economic reason.

What would sound better, a tuba?

I think they were INSTRUMENTAL in the development of rock and roll.

when the electric guitar came around everyone loved the sound, and thus its popularity skyrocketed, previously alot of bands used cellos(bass) and fiddles, guitar birthed rock, then metal. we have alot to thank for it.

well let's think about instruments you can sing and play at the same time. piano (too bigto lug around), harp (too expensive and difficult to learn), organ (again too big), harpsichord (...),

uh.. guitar. small and versatile, you can be a one man band. also guitars are easily distorted.

Because the guitar is the best insturment there is out there to express yourself with, it's versitile, and it sounds better than any other insturment in my personal opinion.
