I have just spent three years in Manchester. I think the most intelligent thing to say about it is to make sure you live in the right area of it (I suggest Didsbury), and to be home by 10pm. I'm sorry if this sounds limiting. The truth is that Manchester is a fabulous city - before it gets dark. I moved to a place 20 miles out called Warrington, seeking relief from the crime and the yobs, but couldn't find it there (in case you wonder what became of me, I've since moved to New Zealand, and love it here). But if you want to make Manchester your home, and if you have money, there are ways. Most little towns south of Manchester are positively wonderful - like Knutsford. Another possibility would be to lve in Southport or Formby by the Sea and commute in; it seems far, but those are nice places.
Strangely, I miss Manchester now. It was... cool. I'm sure you can get to like it. Good luck.

Manchester is great, yes there are rough areas but hasn't everywhere? the city centre is good for shopping oh and u`ve got the amazing trafford centre too! the greatest football team in the world also reside in Manchester, (the red side).
Yes the crime figures look a bit scary but if your in a nice area and you don't leave things on show then u`l be fine. The people are really friendly and funny.
The music scene is BIG too, many great local artists perform in the bars, pubs and clubs. It has it all, the modern apartment's in the centre and all over now or a nice house on the outskirts for a quiet life.
People don't realise how big Manchester actually is because there chopping it up into bits. For the record: Salford is in manchester! its only called a city cause its got its own university. Bury, Rochdale , Oldham and Stockport are also Mancunian. Manchester rules!!!

...yes, Chriszed - the population of Greater Manchester is 2,730,000 (or it was a few years ago). Get somewhat confused at people rolling out the 'it's always raining' cliche. I lived there for 17 months in the late seventies, and the rain was hardly about. Lived in Levenshulme, and despite my workplace being in Moss Side, off the Princess Parkway, never once feared having a Saturday night special (or something more meaningful) pressed against my back. Throughout the 70's, the trades of the North (Manc. included) indeed slimmed down to make way for the 'leisure industry' - which I believe has it's centre within the noose known to one and all as the M25. The Londoncentric media's interest with 'Manchester' nowadays is for the sexual and immature antics of United players, alongside stories now and then of pregnant girls below the age of 16...and not forgetting ex-Dr.Shipman. London press made the mistake of telling people their lives north of, say Milton Keynes was drab and dreary. Ah well, will be on a plane from Ringway to New York on Tuesday without a hitch...whereas thanks to the paranoiac prose of the national press, it's dears within the M25 will be (again) staring hooded-eyed at anyone with different coloured skin on the buses and tube, and will be white with aching tiredness at the airports whilst watching the screens and police (hopefully handling their guns and rifles with a degree of professionalism this time).

The Downtown area is very nice and I wouldn't mind having a flat there. However, I lived in the Greater Manchester area (Salford), which wasn't the nicest place to live. I'd stick with Downtown.

I lived in Manc for two years. My overall impression is that there are so many cool things to do in Manc and if you are looking for things that are a little out of the ordinary then you will get it there.
The downsides of manc I found, is that it is quite drab looking, I thought it was rather grey. It also rains alot, and is wuite dirty (and I thought smelly, especially around Rusholme). There is also quite a lot of crime around the place. I got used to the feeling around the place while I was there, but my friends commented on my habits when I was not there, like being odd about my purse.

On the flipside, I have loads of friends who also stayed in manc at the same time, and they LOVE it. They think it's great and THE place to be,
So I guess it really depends on what you value most.

Why not go visit the place for a few days, then you can get your own idea

depends on what you mean by nice place, what are you looking for?
also depends on what type of person you are.

Manchester IS a city so there are different areas, some are nicer than others.

I think Manchester is a fantastic place. The city centre has been rebuilt and there is much rejuvenation occurring.

I know two people who live in Manchester (I live in Brighton)

The first person is very educated, has a good job, sends his kids to good private schools, and his wife is well involved in various charities.

He said, "Manchester is truly a wonderful place to live. The people are very friendly and there are excellent facilities."

The second person lives in a slum area, has a poor job, all his kids have runny noses and his wife is a cleaner.

He said, "Nah, mate. It's a bloody 'orrible shitty place to live. Everyone swears all the bloody time and nick fings."

Any good to you?

No. It rains too much and the crime rate is terrible. I got burgled, my car got vandelised twice, I had to leave my shed unlocked because every time I locked it someone broke the lock, someone set fire to the garden, another time someone threw fireworks through the letterbox and loosened the wheel nuts on my car. I only lived there a year, never fell out with anyone and kept myself to myself.
