Some differences. In term of attendance, popularity in each country.
UK*
Cricket is the national sport and Football is the most popular. Rugby union is also popular.
USA*
Baseball has historically been considered America's national pastime and a significant aspect of American culture. However, American football, basketball, and Stock car racing may also lay legitimate claim to being the country's most popular sport. Soccer is also growing popularly.
NFL American Football United States 2005season, 256games, 17,303,791 attendance, 67,593 Ave Attendance.
FA Premier League Football (soccer) England 2005-06 380games, 12,872,613 Attendance, 33,875 Ave Attendance.
.... nevertheless, football ( soccer ) is definately one of the largest fan base ( popularity ) sport as compare to American Football.

American football was established before association football. In those days, there was a greater emphasis on kicking the ball in order to advance it toward the end zones. It has evolved into a pass first, run second, kick third strategy. An Englishman by the last name of Brown decided that association football needed to be different and coined the term "soccer" that continues to be marketed under that name by the powers that be in Europe.

What the English know as football is Soccer in the USA. It is played in the same way we play it over here.
In the USA I believe Football is like English Rugby. They run with the ball but can also kick it over a goal, which is like the rugby posts here.
They are totally different sports but with the same name!
Hope this helps
