This country already has several parties vying for the attention of the public. However, the financial strength of the Republicans and Democrats allows them to eclipse any other contender. That is why both Republicans and Democrats have been allowed to get away with having similar ideas; acting as if they were one entity. Right now there is no highly visible competing force that can show the American people that there is a viable alternative to the two party hegemony. I think the only way in which the two party strangle hold on this country can be broken is if we have major campaign finance reform that allows for others to enter the political arena on equal footing with the Republicans and the Democrats.

In my analysis I believe that we will not have a "thrid party" but the two major parties will cease to be the republicans and the democrats. It is my opinion that the leadership of the democratic party has been moving farther and farther from the center over the past decade. This move has alienated some of the most conservative democrats, centrists, prompting them to switch parties. Some of them have moved to the republican party, which has caused the republican party to start moving toward the middle. I believe that as the democrats continue to try and differenciate themselves from the ever more liberal republicans they will continue to alienate voters until they all switch to being republicans. As has already happened, some of the most conservative republicans will leave the republican party because they don't like the way that it has been going, the most common place for them to end up is in the libertarian party. In my analysis I believe that the democrats will become a marginalized third party and the republicans will become the leftist liberal party and the libertarians will become the major conservative party. As the libertarians have started to get some republicans in their midst they have moved somewhat away from their roots, prompting the formation of a new, even more anarchist political party, the boston tea party.
One of the things we must do to enliven the political debate is remove the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance reform law, it stifles the voice of third parties by restricting political speech for 60 days before a federal election. It was a terrible Idea and needs to be overturned yesterday.

this country is in the need of a third and a Fourth party. no thinking person could possibly believe that they are represented by our current parties. personally i think that what we really need to do is change the structure of the government so that the states hold the majority of the power because we are way to large of a country for a strong federal government to accurately represent the people.

Yes, this is just my opinion, but the two parties have become too blended, not making any real big differences between the two. Having a third party might help, and it might help polarize the other two.

Absolutely, the two we have are completely bought off but it won't be easy because of the lack of run-off elections. People won't vote for a third party in mass if they think their vote has no chance.

However, election laws passed by the two "major" parties have made it an unbalanced plying field. The Independent party Fu**ed up when the ran with Buchanan.

Vote Libertarian. Vote no to all incumbents, all parties. Once is enough, more just allows extra time to mess things up worse.
