ALERT!!
Laser light in the visible to near infrared spectrum can cause damage to the retina resulting in scotoma (blind spot in the fovea). This wave band is also known as the "retinal hazard region".

It has been known that, with enough exposure, laser light can harm the inner back portion of the eye ( retina) where light-sensitive cells are located.

I'd be a bit concerned with your obsessive, compulsive behavior that is making you look directly into that harmful laser light.
Why do you think you want to ruin your eyesight?
Because, that's exactly what you are doing.
The intensity of the concentrated laser light will "burn" into your retina causing irreparable damage and possible blindness.

Need I go on?

It depends on what type of scanner you have. Certain laser scanners, over time, can cause some damage to eyes. However, it isn't very common. I used to scan my face on the scanner with my eyes open and nothing ever happened, though I do wear contacts and have been since I was a little girl (I started with glasses). People with weak eyes tend to have them degenerate over the years; I started with barely some nearsightedness and now I have very poor vision. If you have healthy vision it'll probably not damage you until you do it for prolonged periods of time.

Everyone is different though.

My husband went blind for 2 months from flash burn resulting from being too close to a firework. Freak accidents happen. He set off 2421039424 of these fireworks, and then this one happened to make him blind. (He's okay now but permanentaly scarred the backs of his eyes and he can't see color, EVER again).

I reccommend NOT doing that, but then again, as Darwin says, the weak will be weeded out. Obviously the person who blanks out and stares into the sun or stares at a laser WILL go blind eventually and live all alone and never reproduce, so no more people with such poor judgement go on.

Unless you put your eyes right on the scanner I do not believe you will have any trouble. I am not familiar with a laser mouse. I have an optical mouse.

If you have a tenedency to turn the mouse wrong side, I would get some glacier glasses to do what youre doing, because that LAZER is VERY dangerous!! in your eyes!!
