I dont know, he is not trying to be black, gangs and stuff got nothing to do with being black, i the gangs stuff got invented by John Cena's ancestors which are Italians so it is not trying to be black, black people just want to take that image and keep it and show it off and saying it is their own invention, i dont like John Cena but dont go dissing like that, do it in the otherway, say that he sucks or something not just trying to be black it doesnt matter it is not about colour. Besides this is the image he took into the WWE and the WWE tells him to act like this, WWE is scripted by the way and all the way fake but sports entertainment.

Yesterday I watched my tivo'ed version of Wrestlemania 21 - year and a half old, close to 2 years here soon enough.
Cena came out and beat JBL in the match that put him over. It was a decent enough match, not the main event but good enough. JBL did his best to put Cena over, and in the end, the celebration by Cena was believable enough.
But that entrance music jammed then, and if memory serves, was relatively new at the time.
Now I know a lot of entrance music sticks with someone for a long time... (See Ric Flair).
But the whole hip-hop culture defines itself on being fresh, and at 2 years old, that song ain't fresh.
So it's no wonder Cena has slowly been altering his image, losing the street attitude and vernacular, and substituting it with salutes. A decent salute too, most people wouldn't take the time to learn it correctly, and he's pretty darn close.
So, to answer this question, I don't think Cena tries to be black. I think he had a role to play as the hip-hop thugish up and comer in WWE, and is now outgrowing that, into a well developed character that is easily identified.
By the way, Eddy Guerrero did the s-t-f-u in his match with Rey on Mania 21, but back then it was the s-t-f. Cena needs moves of his own, then he can be legit. Renaming a move does not make it yours. (See Dudleybomb, Awesomebomb, Batistabomb, etc.)
