Others have already given you his name, Bob Keeshan, but an interesting note is that, before he was the Captain, he was a character on an old, old kid's show called Howdy Doody. He played a silent clown named Clarabelle, and was always in make up so no one ever say his face.

Lee Marvin was injured in the battle of Saipan four months prior to Iwo Jima.
Bob Keeshan was a marine but the war ended before he shipped out of the USA.
