Attraction is one thing and it could be towards a female friend. However, love is a bond; the attraction is much stronger.So, the attraction must be mutual, brought on by hormones.

Well, Desmond Morris wrote an interesting book called "the Naked Ape". In the chapter dedicated to sex, he explains from a biological and ethological how men feel attracted toward women. There are some features we (humans) share with the apes.For example, he states in his book that women's breast resemble buttocks and in the jungle, a female apes use their hindquarters to show that they are in heat. So, when human beings started walking upright, this similar feature will elicit an arousal response to women. That's from an ethological perspective without taking into consideration what culture/environment may influence this attraction to women.

Instinct. Evolution explains that man has a desire to propogate, to keep the species going. Pheromones and other chemicals help the attraction along, but the prime motivation is the planting of the seed to bring forth the next generation.

I think our love etc. is a further developement of the very basic animal instinct, the want to procreate. Mamals need a male and a female for that, I've noticed.

The first is pysical outward apperance, the second is knowing the person, and ia:ken in the senses of smell, chemistry and somestimes its already been played that they must meet and see whaat happens.
