It is a silly name. I don't know why. But I read somewhere that Buffy was the Queen Mother's nickname when she was a little girl.

Because they did, Would you watch margaret the vampire slayer? Shes supposed to be a cute high school chick, and Buffy is what the writer thought of, when they thought all american high school chick! Really I have no clue why Buffy :)

It is Buffy because in the original story Buffy was a cheerleader and it was supposed to be a comedy.
