Can there not be respect in opposition?
LBJ and Goldwater had mutual respect, and they were at opposite poles!

I couldn't agree with you more and great example you brought up.
The reason why there is such venom is largely due to the corporate media and on the forefront of this is Fox News. If we polarize Americans to think of each other as red state/ blue state - Conservative / Liberal - Democrat / Republican then it provides a pre-text for us to pre-judge other people before we hear what might be a good point on their behalf. But this is the primary reason they do this. If we don't speak with one another then the "manufacturing of consent" can be accomplished easier by our governments public relations machine. The danger for the powers that be (government & corporate) is that we do speak with one another and learn from each other...that would be disaster for them. There can be respect if we all remember that we are not these divisive categories but what we really are in the most simplest of truths......AMERICANS - We The People!

i agree in principle, but sometimes people who are at opposite poles politically disagree vehemntly, and if the worst they do in anger is to call their nemesis a fool or an idiot then they are showing great restraint! If some people like myself agree that to alleviate child poverty,( so that children are not socially marginalised by lack of funds), the government should use employment contributions to provide welfare; and others believe that children of poor or unemployed families should be removed for adoption - then there will be heated debate. I personally think that calling someone a fool for the latter belief is only being observant!

respect has gone out the window...there are just a handful of folks like goldwater left...i disagreed with goldwater a good deal of the time, but i always respected him...i knew he was sincere in his beliefs, and that he took his positions because he thought that they were good for the country, not because a focus group or a lobbyist told him to...and when he said it, he meant it...

Yes people can disagree and still respect one anothers opinion. I have many friends who have different ieas than I do, but we can discuss them in a respectful manner. We can even jokingly tease each other about our differences and at the end of the conversation, still be the bet of friends. If Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush can do it, anyone can.

I have deep respect for the idiots, sorry, opponents, on the other side who will enter into a sane debate, but not with those who will just climb on a soapbox to yell their opinion.

They are when the cameras are off and its just them. I think you need to be less thin skinned. Politics is a blood sport, sport. Look who Mary Madeline married! Right after the 1988 election.

You are correct of course
BUT...

Many people do not know how to debate respectfully, and add racist or personal slander in their arguments, then they become idiots ! or fools !
I have been brought up to believe, the key to other people's respect for you , lies in your own hands !

no -- they are just uninformed. Thats what democracy and dialogue is all about. Exchanging ideas and so on. An idiot or a fool is one who opens his mouth without doing research.

Not at all, though, some of them are fools. It feels like a great number of them believe what they believe not because life experience or whats best for them, but more what thier friends believe.

I agree completely, i think there can and should be respect for those with different opinions, unfortunately doesn't really happen.
Peopel think that if they insult those with differing views that must make their viewpoint right- it really show how insecure they must be with their views.
