Looking for the best way to move state to state. Packing a Uhaul/Budget and driving myself. Are Pods or any of their competitors a good way to go? Any other suggestions?

Rent the cheapest truck that'll hold everything you have (try Penske in addition to the others you've mentioned)

Find someone who's just moved and ask for their boxes.

Pack everything yourself.

Hire somebody to help you load/unload your truck (try 2 men and a truck or something similar) It probably won't cost more than $100 to load and another $100 to unload its money very well spent.

If there is a Pod Company available in the city you are moving from and the city you are moving to I use them. You can pack them at your own time and have them stored if necessary. If you pack a UHaul you will have to drive it, pay for gas, and find a way to transport your car a the same time. Do some research.

The first and most important thing to do is go through everything that you own and get rid of anything that you haven't used in the last year. This is especially important if you have lived in the same place for a long time. I have moved several times and each time I threw away only a fraction of what should have been thrown out the first time. Once you have your stuff down to a reasonable level you have to decide if you are physically capable of hauling your stuff down to a truck and then hauling it upstairs at the new location. If you are then rent a U-haul. If not you should consider using a moving company but be careful. They tend to employ light-fingered people so be sure to get insurance.

I used PODS for my move. It was within $10 of the cost of a rental truck and car carrier BEFORE FUEL. You can take your sweet time loading/unloading. It is almost ground level, so no climbing up a ramp or worse, a truck with no ramp. No worries about breaking down on the trip. If you need to store your things they will do that, too. Their people are awesome to work with.

Whatever you choose, stay away from U-Haul. They have more breakdowns than all other rental companies combined. Ask any tow truck driver.

I haven't used the pods myself but have a couple of friends who have and they raved about them. They said that the price was comparable to U-Haul and they were MUCH easier to load!
