I think you could start off with SQL2005. You get a free express edition downloadable from Microsoft's site.
SQL would give you a good idea of how a databases work and there are plenty of books and online resources for the same.

Database is collection of tables, each table is collection of records and fields where record provide information (data)
You can use database packages to add, edit ,delete, search, sort, and query data.

why don't you start with Access, pretty basic and you can learn easily.
