If you do not use ethernet networking for internet access, it does nothing for you. But if you have internet access through cable or DSL modem, it allows you to connect multiple computers in your house the capability to access the internet. For example, if you have your desktop and modem in your computer room, you can connect from your computer to the router via ethernet cable (cat 5) for it to have internet access. For your laptops, you can plug in the wireless ethernet transceiver included in your D-Link and you have a wireless internet connection via the router.
G54 is the revision/speed ID which says it's a 54/108 Mbps unit.
If you already subscribe to cable, adding a internet access service is very reasonable and fastest for consumers. You can also subscribe to DSL which is very inexpensive now but not everyone will be able to get it. Your house need to be about 2-5 miles or less to your phone switching station.

Good luck. You'll love the wireless internet access from your laptop anywhere from your house.

Mbps stands for tens of millions of bits in accordance to 2d or megabits in accordance to 2d and is a level of bandwidth (the completed information flow over a given time) on a telecommunications medium. As for it is extra effective LINKSYS. D-link AOL instantaneous Messenger on any laptop on my community, it causes the router to reset. Oh, and it would not reset purely the once once you sign in.. it continually resets itself rather a lot each and every minute at the same time as you're signed on

If you have two computers it allows you to let a second computer access the internet through the first one...wish I was technical enough to tell you more but that is the basic purpose so you don't have to pay for a second internet connection.
