We can only hope! If we could start a police state, execute protesters by the thousands, use chemical weapons on California and New York, force state sponsored religion onto the masses, and create a microwave that seats fifty, then the rest of the world would finally look to us as heroes!

The added cops enforcing some laws (such as speeding) are there to collect money, ie. added taxes. If we were in a police state you couldn't have asked the question in a forum like this. We are, however, headed toward more controls such as IDs. This has been happening for some time and goes back many years. We have been in danger for years and are just now beginning to do something about it. I'm surprised we didn't have a serious incident long before 9-11.

The police in the USA seem to have much more power (and the tendency to exercise it) over the ordinary citizen than they do in most first world countries. I think that this has to do with the rather conservative hard line approach in the USA and the quality of the average policeman which is basically the product of the low level of earnings they are offered.

On the other hand, the US police face a comparatively much greater percentage of population prone to criminal activity.

The US is not even in the the same universe as a police state. If and when become one, you will not need to ask the question.

Yes, we already are. Don't believe me? look at the number of traffic cops out there. Theres a LOT better things they could be doing than harrassing motorists. So what if a couple ppl go down the road a little faster than the govt says they can, Whoop dee fscking doo! Less traffic enforcement, more security patrolls.
