Yes it is possible. You will see your desktop and you can start any software application you have on that computer.

Settings to do the remote desktop depends by what OS you have, the network hardware and configuration. Sometimes you have to use third part software to have full access to your remote computer.

Remote desktop means that you can access a computer screen (it means everything) in your LAN or from Internet.
It is simple the remote desktop is an application that sends the other computers data (like Sound Card Data , Graphic Card Data and any communication in the computer) on the LAN or Internet to the other.(it is encrypted and safe) and your computer monitor will become the others computer monitor and you can control it completely , it is just like a wireless monitor and keyboard and mouse;)

in the LAN you only need to execute the remote desktop application and enter the IP address of the computer in LAN with its user name and password , But on the Internet the IP address of the computer must be VALID or you must have connected to a virtual private network to access another computer.

Yes...your PC actually emulates (displays) the remote desktop...or vice versa...this is an excellent tool for someone who YOU allow to work on your PC...remotely...or, in a seminar or webcast, you can see what the other person is doing. It's not 'like a movie'...it's just like you're looking over the other person's shoulder while they're working...just a short delay due to transmission across the Internet...clear?
