It sounds like you're using a USB router. You'll need to install the drivers from the CD that came with the router. Follow the instructions that came with it.
If you have a network card in your computer and if your router has an RJ-45 LAN port, just connect your laptop to the router with a CAT-5 patch cable. Don't waste your time with the USB connection, they can be a bit of a pain to deal with.

Unfortunately you didn't mention what Linksys router you had. Perhaps your modem has both ethernet and USB, and you've plugged your router to the ethernet while your computer is still plugged into the USB port.
When setting up the router for the first time, be certain that the modem's ethernet port works (that is, you have been able to get online using an ethernet or Cat 5 cable from your PC to the modem). The router should be plugged into the ethernet port of the modem, and your PC plugged into one of the 4 ports at the back of the router.
I believe most of the Linksys routers out in the market do not have USB ports, only their gateways (modem-router-in-one). They did have a a router with a USB connection before but I think it has been discontinued.
