I remember bits a pieces about a 1980s movie where a teen is home with his mom, and he is teasing her that he wants to commit suicide. The movie revolves around her trying to stop him, but in the end, I think he does commit suicide.

"Harold and Maude" sounds right. The questioner might have been fooled by the shot of that customized Jaguar/hearse sailing off the cliff, as Harold renounces his love of death and chooses life instead.
