How do you think the writers from the TV show The Shield get their ideas?

Do you think their ideas are based on real cases and events? Is it true that the team is based on a real life corrupt anti gang unit in LA?

It scares me... but I do think a lot of the stuff that they do on that show is based on real cases. Many shows hire old dectives and police officers to get their stories.
