A computer won't "recognise" a router in the manner that it will recongnise other hardware.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions on setting up the router. When properly configured the router will assign an IP address to your computer along with other network settings so that your computer will use the router to get on the network.
Some very general instructions:
1. Power everything off.
2. Connect the router's WAN port to the DSL or cable modem.
3. Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN ports.
4. Power up the router.
5. Power up the computer.
6. Go into the network settings for the computer and set it for DHCP. In Windows, select "Obtain an IP address automatically."
7. If you changed the settings, restart the computer.
8. Launch your web browser and point it at the IP address of the router. This will be in the instructions that came with your router. If you can't find the instructions, open a command prompt box and type IPCONFIG and press Enter. The Default Gateway is your router.
9. Log on to your router's management page (the ID and password are in the instructions) and finish configuring it.
10. On most cable modem systems, you should not have to do anything, it should already be working.
11. If you have DSL, you may have to configure your PPPoE settings on the WAN interface in the router. Again, your instructions will guide you here.
12. If you configured PPPoE on your router, you should uninstall the PPPoE software from your computer. It is no longer needed and will interfere with your internet connection if you don't uninstall or disable it.

Maybe you need a driver for it... You need to go the website of the brand of your router. They will have FAQs(frequently asked questions) also. If this doesn't help. Call their 800 toll free number or email the company. I find this always helps.
